TIR is a part of the wider subject of Applied Metapsychology. Metapsychology was a term first used by Freud and developed further in the 1980s by psychiatrist Dr Frank Gerbode into a system of structured application techniques including TIR. It is a systematic attempt to discern and describe what lies beyond the facts and laws of psychology, such as the relations between body and mind or concerning the place of the mind in the universe.
